Case Study: Upgrading the CCTV System at Fenton Primary School

Introduction

In a collaborative effort to enhance the security infrastructure at Fenton Primary School in Haverfordwest, the H3 Group partnered with Pembrokeshire County Council to upgrade the school’s CCTV system. This case study outlines the comprehensive upgrade process, detailing the installation, equipment used, and the outcomes achieved.

Background

Fenton Primary School, located in Haverfordwest, identified the need for a more robust and reliable CCTV system to ensure the safety and security of its students, staff, and property. The existing system was outdated and lacked the capacity to cover all critical areas of the school premises. To address these concerns, the H3 Group was commissioned to design and install a state-of-the-art CCTV system.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the CCTV system upgrade were:

  • To provide comprehensive coverage of both internal and external areas of the school.
  • To enhance the quality and reliability of video surveillance.
  • To ensure the system could store a significant amount of footage for extended periods.
  • To achieve certification to the NSI Gold Standard, ensuring high-quality installation and operation.

Installation Process

The H3 Group undertook the following steps to upgrade the CCTV system:

  1. Initial Assessment and Planning
    • Conducted a thorough site survey to identify key areas requiring surveillance.
    • Developed a detailed plan outlining the placement of cameras and other equipment.
  2. Equipment Installation
    • Genie System: Installed a Genie System, which included two Network Video Recorders (NVRs) to manage and store video footage.
    • Cameras: Deployed 37 cameras, both internally and externally rated, including bullet and turret dome cameras. These cameras were strategically placed to cover all critical areas of the school.
    • Network Infrastructure: Added a 16-port and a 4-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch to support the increased range and capacity of the system.
    • Storage Capacity: Ensured the system had over 30TB of storage capacity to accommodate extensive video recording.
  3. Implementation and Testing
    • The installation was completed within 10 workdays.
    • Conducted rigorous testing to ensure all components were functioning correctly and providing the desired coverage and quality.
  4. Certification
    • The entire system was certified to the NSI Gold Standard, a mark of excellence in security system installation and operation.

Outcomes

The upgraded CCTV system at Fenton Primary School achieved the following outcomes:

  • Enhanced Security: The school now has comprehensive surveillance coverage, significantly improving the safety and security of students and staff.
  • High-Quality Video: The new cameras provide high-resolution video, ensuring clear and detailed footage.
  • Increased Storage: With over 30TB of storage, the school can retain video footage for extended periods, aiding in incident investigations.
  • Reliable Operation: The system’s certification to the NSI Gold Standard ensures it meets high standards of reliability and performance.

Conclusion

The partnership between the H3 Group and Pembrokeshire County Council successfully upgraded the CCTV system at Fenton Primary School, providing a safer and more secure environment for the school community. This project demonstrates the importance of investing in modern security infrastructure to protect educational institutions.

Future Recommendations

  • Regular maintenance and updates to the CCTV system to ensure continued high performance.
  • Periodic reviews of camera placements and coverage to adapt to any changes in the school’s layout or security needs.3 additional cameras were added in the October 2024 half term period.
